Who I Am

Marcia Starling

Marcia Starling

My name is Marcia Starling and I am a certified Art teacher for kindergarden through twelfth grade in New York, Florida, and California.

I come from a long line of artists and creative ancestors. Our family life was inundated with with different family members or friends doing their own art or coming together to paint or create other forms of art. I grew up taking art and dance classes at the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts in Blue Mountain Lake for summer fun. Eventually I returned there to teach after earning my masters in Art education.

I welcome you to my website where you will be able to feast your eyes upon some beautiful artworks. In the student artwork section there are many wonderful examples from the students at Plantation Key School where I have taught for the last fourteen years. Then under the Artwork tab you can see some of the artwork that I have created throughout the years. Furthermore under the murals tab you can see some of the murals that my students at Plantation Key School have created to hang in the hallways.

I hope you enjoy my website and if you have any questions then please feel free to click on the contact me link at the top and send me an email!

Art History

A life long study

Art history is rich with interesting tales of life throughout the ages. It chronicles the history of man(woman) visually while disregarding language barriers. Art lessons naturally stem from Art history and are cross curricular.

Drawing

Dates back all the way to cave paintings

You probably made your first mark at age two. You created something new or maybe changed something in the world. Everyone can experience that joy of unfettered creativity as desired. People have drawn and painted for well over 60,000 years for various reasons then as now. Don't be fooled by the classification of "primitive" because it has nothing to do with the magnificent artwork displayed deep in caves. Tens of thousands of painted cows, horses, and other animals grace the cave walls accurately while using the rock contours in harmony. Drawing is the backbone of Art. Drawing can be learned by practicing hand/eye coordination skills and studying the elements of Art. Developing drawing skills is a primary focus to start any 2D project and sometimes 3D too. Drawing utilizes geometry as well as other math concepts such as symmetry or angles of a line.

Painting

Getting your hands dirty

Painting is a whole different animal than drawing. Confidence with drawing skills are always beneficial but not always necessary in painting. Painting requires studies in color and color mixing which varies with each kind of medium be it watercolor, acrylic, or some other kind of paint. Imagery in painting has been dictated by the times historically and today is certainly a time of bending boundaries.

Printmaking

From Linoleum to Screen Printing

Printmaking is an art form dating back to the 1400s. It regained popularity in the 60's because of Andy Warhol and his "pop art' revolution. What I love about printmaking is the endless possibilities throughout the process. Printmaking is like making lasagna, requiring layer after layer of color and image. There are many different techniques of printmaking including 'gadget" printing for younger students, styrofoam and relief printmaking. Serigraphy or screen printing requires a well thought out logical planning. Etchings require good drawing skills.

Plantation Key School

I have taught at Plantation Key School for the last fourteen years and have been able to guide and teach many students from Kindergarden through Eighth Grade. While teaching at Plantation Key School I have been able to cover many subjects with my students. Including Drawing and Painting, Ceramics, Sculpture, Printmaking, and Art History.

Every year while I have been teaching at Plantation Key School I have been able to do fun and exciting things for my students that normally they would not have the opportunity to do. Such as students from grades six to eight are able to participate in creating a mural to hang in the hallway, painting rain barrels for a local charity, creating three ordainments for the local parks christmas three and illustrating a book for the local Red Cross.

As well at the end of each year I strive to have the best art show possible. This event features art work from each student that takes art and features local musicians that come and play music. This event allows parents to come and see all the things their child has accomplished in the past year and is wonderful for the students self esteem.

Wyland Wall

Wyland is both a local artiest and internally known. He is most famous for his whaling walls where and he has painted over one hundred across the world. For his hundredth wall he painted a building in Key Largo Florida.

It was an amazing opportunity for the students to both go and see Wyland Painting the wall and participating and painting with him. For two weeks I was able to bus the kids up and participate in this amazing event. One of my students was even chosen by Wyland to become one of Wyland kid ambassadors to travel to China to paint a canvas on the Great Wall.
